June 2017 Newsletter

System updates complete

Updates are now complete on our library systems, thank you for bearing with us during the disruptions.

The changes allow us to

  • More accurately report on spend and usage of library resources to inform value for money decisions

  • Make efficiencies in our procurement and acquisitions processes

  • Provide faculties with detailed analytics for the first time

Your service will remain mostly unchanged, however, you will notice a few differences in the layout of library search.

  • Holds options will be in the header of the item details box rather than next to each item and will be names ‘request’

  • IDD applications will be easier with a new integrated form

  • You will have a new ‘settings and pin’ option in your account information area, stay tuned for more information on Pin details.

If you experience any problems with the altered interface please let us know via our Ask a librarian service.

Architecture dissertations

Pre 2000 ARCH dissertations have now been successfully moved to offsite archive storage. The dissertations will remain part of our collection and individual records will stay in our catalogue with the following amendments:

Collection: ARCHV ‘in archives please contact the library’

Description: ‘Thesis in Archive storage, request via IDD’

To access the dissertations staff and students will need to fill in an online IDD request (no charge) and the item will be sent directly to the Marylebone library. Once the item arrives, it can be used in the library as reference for as long as needed.

There are many benefits of the move;

  • The remaining dissertations are easier to browse

  • Our oversize collection has space to expand

  • The older dissertations are better protected against wear and tear

Online reading list rollover

We will soon be rolling over the Online Reading Lists from 2016/17 to 2017/18.

The most important action you need to take is to check your existing, published reading lists and ensure that any recent changes you have made are published before 30th June to ensure we roll over/save the most up to date versions. Any changes not published by 30th June will be lost.

In anticipation of the roll-over, please also read the following advice:

Digitisations:

  • If you are planning to request new digitised chapters/ journal articles for your 2017/18 reading lists, you can do so from 17 July 2017. Please do not make any digitisation requests before this date.

  • For module codes that are continuing in 2017/18, you will not need to re-request existing live digitisations.

Continuing module codes:

  • In early July we will roll over existing reading lists, automatically creating a new list for the time period 2017/18, from content copied from the 2016/17 published list.

  • You will not need to add the new time period or re-request existing live digitisations to these rolled-over lists

  • If you are intending to update your 2016/17 list prior to 30 June, only minor edits are recommended. Please re-publish these edited lists before 30 June – changes that are not re-published will be lost.

Old module codes (level 6 and levels 5&6 FABE):

  • Reading lists attached to old module codes will not be automatically republished but will be saved as a draft.

  • You will be able to access these drafts using the My Lists function on Talis Aspire. You will then be able to reuse or adapt this list if required and link to the new module code.

  • If you are planning to re-use or adapt a reading list and you have existing live digitisations, it is important that you select the correct draft list. If you have multiple lists and you are not sure which is the correct one then please get in touch with your Academic Liaison Librarian.

New reading lists:

  • If you are creating a new online reading list from scratch, you do not need to publish the list before 30th June – it will remain in draft in the My Lists function.

  • You will be able to add the 2017/18 time period to your new list from mid-July.

  • When the new module codes have been uploaded to the reading list system you will be able to link your reading list. Please ask your Academic Liaison Librarian if you need advice on linking your list.

  • Do not manually create a new list for your new Learning Futures codes if you are planning to re-use or adapt a reading list from a discontinued module code.

**Please ensure that any saved changes on reading lists are published before 30th June to ensure we roll over/save the most up to date versions. Any changes not published will be lost**
